What the campaign says about it
Woljeongsa Temple was built in 643 CE (12th year of Queen Seondeok) by Jajang, a Buddhist monk from the Silla period. It is the only Buddhist temple in South Korea to have an entire mountain dedicated to the temple. Woljeongsa Temple sits serenely in a place full of auspicious energy from Odaesan Mountain, which is a sacred mountain dedicated to the Bodhisattva Manjushri. 2022-08-24In 1964, Buddhist monk Tanheo, who was a master of the Hwaeom school of Buddhism in Korea and a guru of Oriental philosophy, served as the chief priest of Woljeongsa Temple. His disciple, Manhwa, built today’s Jeokgwangjeon Hall, then monk Hyeonhae built the Daebeopryunjeon Hall, which elevated Woljeongsa in both size and status as a major temple. Although several sacred artifacts and cultural assets were lost to multiple fires throughout the Temple’s life, Wokjeongsa retains plenty of treasures and cultural resources, including the Octagonal Nine Story Stone Pagoda designated as a National Treasure and Dangwoo with their own unique characteristics. Woljeongsa Temple is also home to the Odaesan archives for the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which is a UNESCO World Heritage. This means the Temple offers a perfect blend of historical significance as the resting place of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and a beautiful natural environment.
