What the campaign says about it
The ancient tumuli in Jisan-dong, Goryeong, in Goryeong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, are a group of tombs and historic sites excavated as part of the tombs that belonged to the people of Gaya during the Three Kingdoms era. Most Myeon districts in Goryeong have several groups of ancient tombs densely packed together, but of these tombs, the Jisan-dong tumuli are the most important and notable. Archaeologists have excavated a large amount of earthenware, gilt-bronze coffins, armor and helmets, long swords, and ornaments from the Jisan-dong tumuli, suggesting the owners belonged to the ruling class of Daegaya. Given the artifacts excavated so far, tombs no. 44 and no. 45 are the largest and tallest tombs in the Jisan-dong tumuli group. The owner of one tomb was enshrined in a pit-type stone tomb with the main and minor chambers placed side by side buried underneath a single burial mound. Then, surrounding the tomb were ancillary stone tombs for those that were buried with their master. The practice of human sacrifice indicates this large tomb was created before the late 5th century CE, and possibly for the king of Daegaya. Although most of its furnishings were stolen by grave robbers, archaeologists did manage to find a large amount of earthenware and some gold earrings as well as weapons, including a horse strap pendant and a helmet. Relics and resources excavated from the Jisan-dong tumuli offer great insight into the ruling class of Daegaya, and therefore hold significant value in terms of research on Gaya’s history.
