What the campaign says about it

The Marisan Mountain Tumuli in Haman boast the largest scale among all of the tumuli from the Gaya period. In 1940, during the Japanese colonial period, Marisan Mountain was divided between Dohang-ri and Malsan-ri - the two villages were nested between the same mountain ranges. This also divided the tumuli in the area into two different clusters of tombs - the Dohyang-ri tumuli and Malsan-ri tumuli. In 1963, the Korean government designated both tumuli as historical sites, but continued to follow Japan’s demarcation of the Marisan Mountain area. Later on, in 2011, the government consolidated the two separate tumuli into one given the history and characteristics of both tumuli, and named it the “Marisan Mountain tumuli.” The larger tombs that belong to the Marisan Mountain tumuli can be found on the main ridge that runs south to north and smaller ridges that branch out to the west, whereas the relatively more modest tombs are found on the lower slopes of the mountain. You can get a glimpse of the splendid culture and a sense of luxury the ruling class of Gaya enjoyed through the ornaments made out of gold and silver. You can also gauge how active Gaya was during the 5th and early 6th centuries CE, which was the heyday of Aragaya, in trading and interacting with other countries. Overall, the Marisan Mountain tumuli can give you a better idea of how advanced and sophisticated Aragaya’s culture really was.
