Route 08 · Hantangang basin
Prehistoric Landscape Route
The Hantangang cut a basalt gorge through Yeoncheon, Cheorwon and Pocheon. Seven stops mix that geology with Jeongok-ri, where a hand axe found in 1978 upset the accepted account of Paleolithic East Asia.
Taken in the published order the route covers about 110 km, and its two furthest stops sit 44 km apart. Both are straight-line figures, so real driving is longer.
It passes through three towns: Yeoncheon, Cheorwon, Pocheon.
The longest single hop is Horogoru Fortress to Goseokjeong at 44 km. The shortest is Hantangang River Geopark Center to Hwajeongyeon, 5.0 km apart.
Grouped so that nearby stops share a day, it works out at roughly two days of driving.
Three of the seven stops charge admission. The rest are free to enter, though some sit inside parks that charge separately.
On five of the seven stops the stamp sits in a museum or information centre rather than at the heritage site, which matters if you turn up outside opening hours.
