What the campaign says about it
Pocheon Art Valley is a culture and art venue built inside an old rock quarry. Located in Giji-ri, Sinbuk-myeon, this granite quarry was used to quarry the “Pocheonseok” stone, which was renowned for its strength and beauty, for 30 years since the 1960s. Pocheonseok stones were used in buildings such as the Cheongwadae (Blue House), National Assembly Building, Supreme Court, and Incheon International Airport, which are major national institutions of Korea. Since the 1990s, as the quarry’s deposit of high-quality granite began to run out, it was abandoned and quickly fell into disrepair. The Pocheon-si City Government later turned the area into a culture and art venue. Pocheon Art Valley holds particular significance in that it restores a damaged natural landscape in an eco-friendly way and preserves parts of the past landscapes as they are, carrying on a sense of the modern industrial heritage of the area while creating a place to reflect on how human activity damaged the natural environment. It truly is a unique attraction where you can learn about the local history, culture, and art of Pocheon in one place.
