What the campaign says about it

When the lava from a volcano flows down and cools, cracks can form due to the rapid contraction. These cracks between the rocks are called “joints,” and the vertical joints in the shape of columns with cross sections that are either rectangular, pentagonal, or hexagonal are called “columnar joints.” The shape and size of these columnar joints are determined by the speed and direction in which the lava cools down, and columnar joints facing the sea are more distinct than those that occur inland. As the largest columnar joint formation in Korea, the columnar joints at Daepo Beach in Jungmun are surrounded by polygonal black stone pillars, which look like a traditional folding screen. This majestic formation with 30~40m-tall columns stretching for approximately 1km is truly a sight to behold. The blue waves crashing against the majestic stone pillars stacked next to each other are spectacular enough to leave you in awe of the power of nature.
