What the campaign says about it
Manjanggul is one of the world's largest lava caves in Jeju-do. Manjanggul Lava Tube, which used to be called the “Manjaengi Geomeorigul,” meaning “very deep” in the Jeju dialect, is estimated to have been created 100,000 to 300,000 years ago. But it was not discovered until recently in 1958. Manjanggul Lava Tube is roughly 7.4km long, and the main channel is 18m wide and 23m tall. Currently, Manjanggul’s second entrance is open to the general public, which runs only 1km into the Cave itself. There is also a 7.6m-tall lava column inside the Cave strewn with spectacular lava stalagmites, lava stalactites, lava flows, and lava boulders. A lava column is created when an icicle-shaped stalactite growing from the ceiling meets a stalagmite growing from the floor. The lava column inside Manjanggul Lava Tube is one of the largest in the world. Among countless lava caves around the world, Manjanggul Lava Tube is a very rare case in which the internal shape and topography have been well preserved. It is also the largest habitat for bats in Korea. Thousands of Jeju Greater horseshoe bats and Common bent-wing bats, both of which are the most popular species of bats in Korea, live inside the Cave. But chances of meeting any bats in the section open to the general public are very slim.
