What the campaign says about it
Marado Island, located roughly 30 minutes away by boat from Unjin Port in Jeju-do, is an oval-shaped island that is longer along its north-south axis. Although is believed to have been created by a volcanic eruption in the sea, it does not have a visible crater. The Island’s coastline, which is made up of 20-meter-high rock cliffs with strange formations, was created by the strong wind and waves crashing into the island. Since Marado Island sits near the part of Jeju-do exposed to powerful gusts of wind, the waves created by the wind have carved several caves along the coastline as well. Marado Island is mostly flat on the surface and is covered with short grass, which makes the whole island look like a giant green lawn in spring and summer. Meanwhile, in autumn, silver grass ripples in the wind, turning the island into one large mirror. Although the Island is small (the entire Island takes 1~2 hours to walk around it), the surrounding sea has a rich and diverse ecosystem. The ecosystem on Marado Island consists mostly of seaweeds and animals found in warm waters, which makes it different from Jeju-do. Thanks to its clean environment and diverse marine resources, the entirety of Marado Island has been designated as a natural monument. A monument that reads “Southernmost Point of Korea” is a popular attraction for visitors that make the trip to Marado Island. Not far from the marina is a structure called “Halmangdang.” Halmangdang, which has an altar inside set against a round stone wall, is where the guardian deity who protects the safety of the Haenyeo is enshrined. The devotion of the residents of Marado Island to Halmangdang is special, and it is said that even now, the locals hold rituals at the Halmangdang several times a year.
