What the campaign says about it
An “Oreum” is a parasitic volcano found near the foothills of Hallasan Mountain. Although Jeju-do has 360 Oreums, Geomunoreum Volcanic Cone is the only one to be registered as a World Natural Heritage Site. Geomunoreum Volcanic Cone was named because of its dense forest that looks black in color, and it also means “sacred mountain” in the local dialect. At 456m above sea level, you can climb Geomunoreum Volcanic Cone, which is cool even during the day thanks to the wind that blows through its horseshoe shape landscape, all the way to the top to enjoy a bird’s eye view of its crater. The crater itself has a number of small peaks and its own Gotjawal forest. Gotjawal is a forest formed in an area with rocks scattered around irregularly. It often has a unique ecosystem found nowhere else. Meanwhile, the lava spewing out from the crater flowed along the slope of the Mountain all the way to the coast, creating lava caves. These caves are called the “Geomunoreum Lava Tube System.” Manjanggul Lava Tube, Gimnyeonggul Lava Tube, Yongcheon Lava Tube, and Dangcheomul Lava Tube all belong to this Geomunoreum Lava Tube System. As far as lava caves developed around Oreums go, the scale and length of the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System are on the larger side. Also, its unique and well-preserved ecosystem makes it highly valuable as a natural heritage resource. Moreover, the mines built by the Japanese during the Pacific War and the remains of a charcoal kiln used by the locals give you a glimpse of Jeju-do’s sad history.
