What the campaign says about it

Seongsan Ilchulbong, perhaps the top attraction in Jeju, is an archetypal tuff cone formed by a hydrovolcanic eruption on a shallow seabed. The Island, which was created by layers of magma ejected from the seabed, has cliffs on three sides that have been eroded by seawater. This gives you a clear view into the strata underneath the topsoil of Seongsan Ilchulbong. Originally, the Island was separated by sea from Jeju-do, but as sand and gravel carried by nearby rivers were deposited near the cost, a strip of land gradually blocked the narrow channel between Seongsan Ilchulbong and the main island of Jeju-do. The name “Seongsan” refers to how the Island looks like a magnificent castle built on the sea, while “Ilchulbong” refers to the spectacular sunrise the Island is known for. Grass grows in the bowl-shaped crater that is roughly 26ha wide, and 99 strange rock formations lace the outer rim of the crater. These geological features alone create a spectacular view. But the real beauty of Seongsan Ilchulbong comes from the harmony the Island creates with the surrounding villages in Seongsan, the sea, and the smaller Oreums on Udo Island. It takes about 25 minutes from the ticket office to the summit of Seongsan Ilchulbong on foot. But the slope is quite steep, which is why it is best to take your time and walk up the Island at a more leisurely pace. Meanwhile, the sunrise seen from the peak has been famous since ancient times. At the end of December every year, Jeju-do hosts the Seongsan Sunrise Festival to welcome a hopeful new year.
